Every rental company tells you to book early, which isn't very helpful. So instead let me explain why things fill up the way they do here, and then you can judge your own risk rather than taking my word for it.
The Saturday problem
Long Beach Island runs on Saturday-to-Saturday weeks. Not mostly, but overwhelmingly. Which means the island does not have a steady flow of arrivals and departures; it has one enormous shift change every seven days.
For a crib rental company, that has a specific consequence. What we have is not a pile of cribs spread across the summer. It is a set number of cribs available for each Saturday-to-Saturday slot, and once a given Saturday is spoken for, no amount of goodwill creates another crib. We can turn a crib around inside a changeover day, with pickups early, cleaning while the van is out and deliveries in the afternoon, but the number of cribs is the number of cribs.
So the question is not "will they have a crib in July?" It is "will they have a crib for the week of the 11th?" Those are very different questions, and the second one is answered on a first-come basis several months earlier.
The actual timeline
| Your week | Book by | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Fourth of July | March | Highest-demand week of the year, and it does not move. |
| Mid-July - mid-August | 8-10 weeks out | Peak. Multiple cribs per house are common in this stretch. |
| Late June, late August | 4-6 weeks out | Busy but not saturated. |
| Memorial Day - mid-June | 2-3 weeks out | Plenty of slack, and gorgeous weeks. |
| September | 1-2 weeks out | The island's best-kept secret with a baby. |
| Off-season | A few days | Call us, it will be fine. |
What makes a week tighter than it looks
- Multi-crib houses. One Loveladies booking for three cribs removes half a small fleet from that week. Big houses book early and book deep.
- The Newton upgrade books separately. The Newton mattress goes before the cribs do, so in peak weeks the crib can still be free while the upgrade is not.
- Partial weeks fragment the calendar. A Wednesday-to-Sunday booking can make the surrounding Saturday-to-Saturday slot unrentable. We are happy to take short stays, but they genuinely do cost availability.
If you have left it late
Do not assume you are out of luck. Three things work in your favor.
Cancellations happen constantly. Plans change all summer. Our calendar reflects that in real time, so check it rather than emailing to ask, because the page knows before we do.
Mid-week gaps are real. If you are arriving on a Sunday or leaving on a Thursday, you are shopping in a much less crowded market.
Same-day rescues are a normal part of our week. One of our favorite reviews is from a family whose toddler would not settle in the house's pack 'n play: "I was able to get a foldable crib delivered within hours of reserving and it was a total lifesaver." That is not a fluke, it is Ship Bottom being eight minutes from our garage. If you are on-island and stuck, call. We will tell you honestly whether we can help.
Booking the time, not just the week
One thing worth doing while you are booking: pick your delivery window, not just your dates. Long Beach Boulevard between 2pm and 5pm on a July Saturday is a parking lot, and a crib arriving in the middle of your check-in is nobody's idea of a good start.
Our booking form shows real three-hour windows with real remaining capacity. Early Saturday morning is the best slot on the island and it goes first, which is, in miniature, this entire article.
